Long yet your road, fateful flag!—long yet your road,
and lined with bloody death!
For the prize I see at issue, at last is the world!
All its ships and shores I see, interwoven with your
threads, greedy banner!

Even one-hundred and fifty-two years after its creation, the American flag, praised by poets such as Walt Whitman and represented by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, still creates great fascination in artists. Also in the case of Lisa Borgiani, who has expressed herself over time by sculpture and photography. With her installation Homage to the American Flag she aims to celebrate the spirit and colors of the United States flag by placing several large springs within the historical setting of Palazzo Bovara. The spiral, a shape which has now become distinctive of Lisa’s work and which represents an archetype in many cultures, is attributed a symbolic value, which not only refers to the cycle of life and also the ascent toward the spiritual. The conceptual aspect of the artist’s work is her interest in combining a focus on installation withinin the enviroment. The springs of Lisa Borgiani, the lightweight plastic sheets, both flexible and mobile, are in fact, creating an on-going dialogue with the space that surrounds them, offering new ways for the public to observe and enjoy the installation.

Affretta, allora, affretta, o stendardo dell'uomo
– con passo costante, sicuro, supera i più superbi stendardi regali,
supremo dirigiti al cielo, o simbolo possente –
ascendi più alto di tutti,
o bandiera di stelle! Mio drappo costellato!
A 152 anni dalla sua creazione, la bandiera americana, già cantata da poeti come Walt Whitman e rappresentata da pittori come Robert Rauschenberg, esercita ancora una grande fascinazione sugli artisti. Anche Lisa Borgiani, che da tempo si misura con scultura e fotografia, con l'installazione Homage to the American Flag, vuole celebrare lo spirito e colori della bandiera statunitense, collocando all'interno della cornice storica di Palazzo Bovara alcune molle di grandi dimensioni. Lisa attribuisce alla spirale, forma ormai diventata tratto distintivo del suo lavoro e archetipo presente in moltissime culture, un valore simbolico, che non solo richiama il ciclo della vita e ma anche l'ascesa verso lo spirituale. All'interesse per l'aspetto concettuale dell'opera l'artista unisce una particolare attenzione per la sua installazione nell'ambiente che la ospita. Le molle di Lisa Borgiani, fogli di plastica leggeri, flessibili e mobili, dialogano infatti sempre con lo spazio che le circonda, offrendo al pubblico un modo nuovo di osservarlo e fruirlo.
